Behaviour Consultations

Our senior behaviourist is Ainsley Miller, RQF - DipCABT Level 6, supported by Jennie Shaw who is qualified to Level 4.  This is a formidable team to have working with you!

Behavioural issues are usually complex, been going on for a long time and reach a point where help is needed.

A good behaviourist is looking at medical history, behavioural history, pain, environmental factors and home life.  They leave no stone unturned in the quest to help improve life for you and your dog(s).

Qualifications are an absolute must have.

To understand how your dog is feeling both when the behaviour is happening as well as their overall mood is vital to successfully applying positive reward-based training techniques to help turn challenging behaviours into more acceptable behaviours.

We are COAPE qualified behaviourists and trainers.  Ainsley chose COAPE qualifications because they are the only regulated courses on offer in the UK and because they were aligned with her deep routed belief that animals have emotions. COAPE’s ethos and education courses start with the fundamental premise that the success of all mammals (and birds) is absolutely dependent on their emotional sensitivity. By understanding emotions and interpreting how dogs feel when they display certain behaviours, Ainsley can help owners better understand how their dog is feeling and why.

Ainsley has spent 6 years studying to Level 6 as well as practising as a behaviourist for the past 5 years beginning with setting up Dog Logic which expanded into becoming Active Paws.  She has never turned a case away.

Having the Centre is crucial to being able to train new behaviours in a managed, safe environment.

Ainsley sees you in the home first and then puts a plan together that can pull on the skills of other members of the Active Paws team, including our dogs who work very hard in the role to which they are best suited.

What behaviours can we help with?  Here are the things Ainsley has dealt with to give you an idea.  It is not exhaustive, so if your particular behaviour isn’t here, still call us!

- Dogs lunging and barking at other dogs and/or people
- Noise sensitivity, including fear of fireworks
- Dogs that growl around food, toys or their person
- Hyperactivity
- Dogs stopping doing things they used to enjoy, not just from old age
- Inability to be left at home
- Repetitive behaviour (OCD-like) e.g. shadow chasing, excessive licking of themselves or something, barking
- Issues between dogs living in the same home
- Not eating or always hungry
- Rehomed dogs struggling to adjust to family life
